Are We Any Closer to a Government and/or Revalue?
LINK
This election has not gone the way most of us thought. We all thought there would be a solid winner but obviously that didn’t happen.
Allawi was to have 30 days to form a government but no one has any clue if that clock even started. It’s over 60 days since the election took place and we’re still talking about this.
After 30 days, the president was supposed to pick someone else to try to form the government which in this case would have probably been Maliki unless there was a reason not to choose him and then he was to have 30 days.
Maliki took it upon himself to try to find every loophole there is to get in position. He has aligned himself with a guy who hates him just to try to get the government back in his control.
I believe it was 2008 when Maliki had a crackdown on Sadr’s Mahdi army. That relationship is probably dead, they even have Sistani to resolve any differences in the 2 parties.
Everyone is talking a good game about national cooperation on the government but we all know it’s a power play. They are trying to put out fires before they start.
The vote in Baghdad is coming to a close Friday and from what is being said it doesn’t look like there will be major changes. But we do have the Kurds saying they will back the Shiite alliance so that is over 200 seats and Allawi might have no choice in joining them in forming the government.

Maliki and Allawi are meeting in the next 48 hours to hammer out details of a government but I’m not sure these two can put aside their differences. Allawi is still fighting the fight to be the ONE to form the government and not a group thing. He did win the election so it’s not like he is wrong in that thought.

The vetting of those who won in the election is coming to close and soon we’ll know if there are candidates who will be removed. This is the only way I can see Maliki becoming winner of the election because Allawi is a rep of the Sunni party even if he says he’s national and all his seats are Sunnis who could potentially be Ba’ath members.

With all that being said, I do think we’re closer than ever. I think we will have an agreement this week or next on the government. Then they have some laws to pass, etc. But they also have to come up with something for the UN since Chapter 7 resolutions are coming up in June. This does not mean the RV will happen in June but it can. The picking of the government will NOT be the trigger of the revalue. They have things to settle.
